London Fashion Week: Gavin Douglas

Normally when the Catwalk Queen girls go to Harrods it’s to lust after the latest must have handbag- but at 10.30am on the first day of London Fashion Week I found myself in the Harrods loading bay. Today it was devoid of burly lorry drivers and jammed full of the weird and wonderful fashion press keen to get an eyeful of Gavin Douglas’ S/S 08 collection. 2006 Fashion Fringe winner Douglas did not disappoint, showing a collection that, on the whole, managed to balance feminine and sexy without the former looking prissy and the latter looking slutty.
Douglas opened with a sophisticated palette of ivory, silver, pale gold in the form of butter-soft leather jackets, pleated silk skirts and babydolls, cute ruffled minis (hmmm… maybe best left on the catwalk that one) and an array of strapless dresses with voluminous skirts, some favouring the puffball, others prom style with acres of netting underneath. Then Douglas’ playful (and somewhat saucy) side came through with my personal favourite - an electric blue dress with a graphic metropolis print, closely followed by a borderline fetish number. The upper part of the dress consisted of woven belts - don’t get me wrong, I love accessories as much as the next girl but personally I’ll be keeping belts to the waist area. The show closed with a blaze of Vegas showgirl-chic. Feathered skirts, quilted patent corset belts and enough bling
to blind a Swarovski. In short Douglas is a fantastic homegrown designer and definitely one to watch.
